We Partner with Parents

Parents as Teachers Guilford County is a 15-year old affiliate member of the national organization, Parents as Teachers. We’re built on the principle that parents are their child’s first and best teachers. All parents, regardless of personal circumstances, can be empowered to gain control over difficult life events and interact with their children in a way that facilitates healthy development.

Through the combined use of personal visits, group connections, developmental screenings and our resource network, Parent Educators partner with parents to help build their capacity to support their child’s development.

The Building Blocks

  • Group Connections

Group connections are when we bring all of our families together to go over a broad range of topics that combine educational programs with family fun.

  • Personal Visits

In-Home visits are the very core of what we do. They’re centered on our nationally certified Parent Educators building meaningful relationship with their families.

Carol Simpson
Intake Coordinator
I have enjoyed working with Parents as Teachers since 2001 as the first community volunteer Parent Educator. As a mom of 2 adult kids, and now as a grandmother, I appreciate the need for parenting support for all families! As I crept towards retirement, I took on the role of office manager. Now in partial retirement, enjoy the role of Intake Coordinator.
It gives me the chance to still interact with our families!

Bonnie Trahan
Parent Educator, DPIL and Group Coordinator
Bonnie grew up in South Carolina and Michigan, and considers herself to be fortunate to be the youngest child in a very large family. Bonnie attended Western Carolina University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After spending 15 years working in the fields of sales and management, Bonnie found her way back to what she feels has always been her true calling, working with children. She married one of her childhood best friend’s Kyle, and they have 2 teenage boys, Sullivan and Keegan. Bonnie loves spending time with her family, whether it is hiking in the NC mountains or the woods in Michigan, or collecting shells along the coast of SC.
